Abstract
Strawberry cultivars demonstrate specific growth and yield characteristics.
However, the characteristics of many cultivars have not been systematically assessed under consistent temporal and environmental conditions, making direct comparative analyses difficult.
This study aimed to elucidate the growth and yield characteristics of four Korean strawberry cultivars under the same environmental conditions throughout an entire growing season.
This experiment was conducted in a tunnel-type greenhouse (25×7 m, planting density 1.6 plants m‑2) in the Kyungpook National University Experimental farm (35°53’N, 128°36’E) from September 10, 2021 to April 18, 2022 and from September 19, 2022 to April 18, 2023. The June-bearing cultivars ‘Sulhyang’, ‘Kuemsil’, ‘Arihyang’, and ‘Jukhyang’ were used for this experiment.
Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was carried out followed by Tukey’s honest significant difference (HSD) test as a post hoc analysis.
The MANOVA revealed significant differences among the four strawberry cultivars (Wilks’ lambda = 0.7730, F (18, 5210.448) = 27.5913, p<0.0001). Significant effects were also observed for the year and days after transplanting (DAT) variables.
The HSD test showed significant differences between specific groups for the number of leaves, plant height, petiole length, leaf width, and crown diameter variables.
The results indicate significant variations in growth among several strawberry cultivars over different years.
Most of the cultivars included in this experiment are newly developed Korean cultivars, for which there is a lack of available data regarding their characteristics.
This investigation is supposed to provide fundamental data regarding these cultivars.
