Abstract
In Italy, strawberry is cultivated in all regions, with a wide range of cultivars and cultural techniques.
June-bearing cultivars with medium-high chilling requirements and everbearing (day-neutral) cultivars are cultivated in the North, while low chilling requirement cultivars, bearing fruit for long periods in protected culture, are mainly grown in the South.
The Department of Forlì of the Council for Agricultural Research and Economics – Research Centre for Olive, Fruit and Citrus Crops (CREA-OFA) coordinates strawberry breeding programs in different areas: Calabria and Basilicata regions (southern Italy) characterized by mild winter and winter planting system; Romagna area (Po Valley) with medium-chill winter and summer planting; Verona area (Po Valley), with medium-chill winter and fall culture; Bolzano area (the Alps mountain area), with cold winter and pluriannual culture.
The breeding programs carried out by CREA-OFA are co-funded either by public or private companies located throughout the national territory.
All programs are performed using traditional breeding methods consisting in the planning and implementation of controlled crosses and the subsequent selection of the new genetic material obtained.
The common objective of all programs is to obtain plants being resistant to soil borne pathogens (mainly related to the incoming strong limitations to the use of chemical soil fumigations before planting), being very productive, even in conditions of water and nutritional deficiency, and fruits with high organoleptic qualities and prolonged shelf-life.
The latest cultivars released in the European Union are ‘Agnese’, ‘Callas’, ‘CRAPO 135’, ‘Medì’, ‘Ligea’, ‘Elodì’ and ‘Annalisa’.
