Abstract
We have investigated the wild strawberry resources distributed in Southwest China since 2001, and a total of 280 accessions were collected from this area.
Among them, 45 accessions suspected as a new species were collected from Sichuan Province and Guizhou Province, which were obviously different from the recognized species through more than ten years of continuous observation.
The taxonomic characteristics of these resources were observed and described, and compared with the several possible similar confused species.
A dichotomous key to the ten diploid wild species native to China was listed considering runner branching, leaflet number, flower and fruit characteristics, as well as hair status on the petiole, runner and peduncle.
And the molecular methods were also used to verify further.
And a new Fragaria species, F. emeiensis Jia J. Lei, was discovered and named.
Its leaf was quinquefoliolate, rarely trifoliate.
The petiole, runner, peduncle and pedicel were glabrous or covered with extremely sparse and appressed hairs.
The inflorescence was obviously taller than leaf with 1-6 flowers per inflorescence.
The petal was apopetalous or slightly overlapping.
The fruit was red, relatively big, irregular oval, hemispherical, or short conical, little juice, acid or tasteless without fragrance.
The achene was red and sunken.
The persistent calyx was spreading or slightly reflexed.
It was mainly distributed at Mount Emei in Sichuan Province, Mount Fanjing in Guizhou Province, and their surrounding areas with an altitude of 1,800-3,000 m.
It was diploid (2n=2x=14).
