Abstract
In order to clarify the distribution, taxonomy and utilization of wild strawberry germplasm resources in China, a large scale of investigation and collection has been conducted in more than 20 provinces of China since 1980. 958 wild strawberry accessions have been collected throughout China and conserved in the Shenyang Agricultural University.
Of about 26 recognized Fragaria species in the world, 15 were identified as distributed in China, including 10 diploid species: F. chinensis Lozinsk., F. daltoniana Gay, F. emeiensis Jia J. Lei, F. hayatai Staudt, F. mandschurica Staudt, F. nilgerrensis Schlecht., F. nubicola Lindl., F. pentaphylla Lozinsk., F. vesca L., F. viridis Duch., and 5 tetraploid species: F. corymbosa Lozinsk., F. gracilis A. Los., F. moupinensis (Franch) Card., F. orientalis Lozinsk, and F. tibetica Staudt et Dickoré. Among them, F. emeiensis Jia J. Lei is a new species discovered in the areas surrounding Emei Mountain in southwest China.
There are four concentrated distribution areas of wild strawberry resources in China, including southwest China, northwest and central China, northeast China, and Xinjiang Autonomous Region.
Among them, southwest China is the distribution area of most wild strawberry species in China.
Of the all 14 wild diploid species in the world, 10 are distributed in China, in which some only distributed in China, and all 5 tetraploid species in the world are almost distributed only in China.
A dichotomous key for Fragaria species distributed in China was prepared, considering runner branching, leaflets, sex, fruit characteristics, as well as presence of hairs on petioles, runners and peduncles.
The types of utilization of wild strawberry resources in China were for fresh market by direct harvesting in the habitat, commercial cultivation in the open field, processing and distant hybridization.
