Abstract
Nowadays, Chinese express delivery logistics is developed, changing the consumption habits of the Chinese population, especially young people who prefer online shopping, which also facilitates the long-distance transportation of fruit such as strawberries.
Firmness or texture is an important quality characteristic of strawberry, especially for long transportation.
We conducted strawberry hybrid breeding practice and selected the mainly cultivated cultivar ‘Benihoppe’ as the control cultivar of firmness (higher firmness than control cultivars of ‘Benihoppe’ are referred to as HFV; as the same that lower firmness cultivars than control are referred to as LFV). We obtained F1 individuals by making reciprocal cross in using HFV (‘Kaorino’) and LFV (‘Zijin Jiuhong’), respectively.
Through statistical analysis, the phenotypic data were preliminarily summarized from F1 progeny, which representing high firmness aggregating other traits, such as the fruit size, good conical shape, early maturing, multi resistance, as well as high yield.
By screening each above F1 progeny with relative high or low firmness performance, the unique F1 individuals showing relative high firmness or low firmness were selected out, and followed these unique F1 individuals asexual propagation in the field in summer, we obtained high-firmness line G12 and low-firmness line G21, which showed us stable firmness phenotype among different years in F1 progeny, after a series of field observation and selection.
Through continual reciprocal crossing of these two extreme high-firmness and low-firmness lines among F1 progeny, named G12 and G21, we got 905 F2 individuals from G12 × G21, 1028 F2 individuals from G21 × G12, separately.
From continuous phenotypic statistical analysis of F2 individuals, especially focusing on firmness, preliminary heredity of firmness aggregating early fruiting, conical shape, as well as high yield related traits, were summarized.
In our experiment, we preliminarily explored that the firmness of strawberry is matrilineal inheritance, and there is no correlation between the strawberry firmness and the fruit size.
