Abstract
All kinds of ways are being investigated today to enable sustainable water use in horticulture.
Substrate sensors can provide added value in producing strawberries to optimize the fertigation strategy to the water demand.
In changing climate conditions multiple regions in the world have to face more extreme weather conditions.
In North-West Europe we also face periods of more intense precipitation alternating with longer dry periods.
Growers lose water through drainage in substrate cultivation, especially on tabletops with free seepage.
In an everbearing ‘Karima’ cultivation we conducted a fertigation strategy supported by substrate moisture content measurements with substrate sensors.
We were able to reduce water consumption with 19% and reduce drain with 38%.
