Impact of seedling grafting and Biochar soil treatment under conditions of reduction of the irrigation norm and chemical fertilizers amount on tomato growing

Abstract

The research objective was to establish the behavior of tomato-grafted plants grown on Biochar treated soil which had been subject to combine stress conditions consisting in lowering the amount of water and the dose of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers.
The results obtained proved a significant positive effect of the grafting and the use of Biochar on the average yield of the tomato crop, by using low amounts of water and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus). Plant growth and productivity have improved, by interacting with the processes involved in the plant responses to stress and the accumulation of compounds that allow increasing the plant’s resistance to abiotic stress.
Superior commercial quality of tomato fruits was scored.
No significant changes were identified in the nutritional quality of the fruits harvested from grafted tomatoes.
