Comparative study on fruit quality of some Romanian tomato cultivars

Abstract
Today, in Romania, tomatoes are in top three cultivated and imported vegetable, even though tomatoes were underappreciated by Romanians for decades.
Accordingly, to the Official Catalogue of Crop Plants, the Romanian tomatoes cultivars encompass 84 genotypes and Vegetable Research Development Station – VRDS Buzau possess 23.8% of them.
In the recent study, we have evaluated the nutritional quality of ten tomato genotypes: four with indeterminate growth (Andrada, Hera, Ovidia, Siriana F1), five with determinate growth (Chihlimbar, Darsirius, Florina 44, Kristinica, Mariuca) and one with indeterminate growth, cherry type, Ema de Buzau from VRDS Buzau.
The fruit quality traits are important in order to satisfy the consumers taste, but also to ensure a nutritional value cultivar for farmers, and certainly for the market.
In this matter, physicochemical parameters were measured: fruit firmness, total soluble content, dry matter, acidity, lycopene and beta-carotene values.
Our results highlighted that the best content in antioxidants such as lycopene and beta-carotene, were accumulated by Andrada and Chihlimbar cultivars.
The highest fruit firmness was obtained by Florina (7.18 N) and Mariuca (5.75 N) cultivars, the trait is also showing long shelf-life capacity.
In terms of total soluble content, the maximal values were recorded by Ema de Buzau (6.14 °Brix), Chihlimbar (5.43 °Brix), and the minimal values were obtained by Florina (4.38 °Brix) and Siriana F1 (4.43 °Brix). Our study showed that the Vegetable Research Development Station Buzau not only possess a wide range of tomato cultivars, but also high nutritional products for Romanian farmers and market.
