Comparative crop behavior of an assortment of broad bean (Vicia faba L.)

The garden broad bean (Vicia faba L.) is a crop with a long tradition in Romania, proof of this fact is the existence of numerous local populations.
Lately, however, numerous foreign cultivars have arrived in the country, whose behavior in the climatic conditions of our country is not known.
The purpose of this paper is to study the behavior in a comparative trail of an assortment of garden beans composed by the following cultivars: ‘Karmazin’, ‘De Monica’, ‘Red Epicture’, ‘Eleonora’ and ‘White Windsor’, in the conditions of the NE of the country and to characterize them from a morphological, phenological and agroproductive point of view.
The experiment was carried out at Iasi University of Life Sciences, during 2020-2021 period, on a cambic chernoziemic type soil.
The obtained results showed that the assortment is relatively diverse from a morphological point of view and presents a mostly similar phenology, with a vegetation period of about 80-90 days.
The cultivar ‘Karmzin’ obtained the best yield of 8.3 t ha^‑1 of green beans, and ‘Red Epicture’, with 5.65 t ha^‑1 was the least productive cultivar; the experimental average being 7.32 t ha^‑1.
