Abstract
100 years old Russian worldwide collection of vegetable and cucurbit genetic resources, stored in VIR, includes more than 52500 germplasm accessions of different status from 98 countries, belonging to 31 botanical families, 148 genera, 610 species.
The families Cucurbitaceae (26.4%), Solanaceae (20.4%), Brassicaceae (14.5%), Apiaceae (11.5%), Amaranthaceae (7.2%), Alliaceae (5.7%), Asteraceae (5.7%) are the largely represented.
VIR collection uniqueness is 30-80%. Passport database includes all accessions from the collections.
According N.I.Vavilov concept of initial material for breeding all accessions have been characterized and evaluated for many morphological, biochemical, immunological, physiological and agronomic traits in the different ecogeographic zones of Russia, in greenhouses, climate cells, under intensive light culture, in infectious conditions, etc., for three years using the VIR descriptors and standardized research methodics.
Evaluation database of ecological diversity includes 60-90% accessions depending of crops.
Vegetable collections have been structured: core, traits, and genetic collections have been created.
The VIR collections gaps have been filled in by collection missions and exchange.
Taxonomic and botanical studies, evaluation of genetic integrity have been developed.
Genotyping of main vegetables is carrying out by using of different types of molecular markers.
