Effects of seaweed extract for seed priming of tomatoes and eggplant on seed germination and seedling vigor

Abstract

It is known that soaking seeds before sowing can have a positive effect on their germination, this result being valid for many species.
Few studies have been conducted that looked at the effect of soaking seeds in seaweed extracts.
The present research follow the result of pretreatment of tomato and eggplant seeds in three priming solutions formulated with three commercial products with Ascophyllum nodosum, Ecklonia maxima and Laminaria digitata. Two tomato and two eggplant romanian cultivars were used as biological material.
After soaking the seeds in the seaweed solutions, they were sown on Petri dishes.
Seed germination dynamics and seed germination energy were evaluated.
Fourteen days after germination, there were also measured the fresh weight of the plantlets and the length and weight of the roots and shoots.
The applied treatments can have a positive influence on the vigor of the plantlets, with possible implications in the vigor of the seedlings.
