Research on the expressiveness and conservation of tomato genotypes from the BRGV Buzau germplasm core collection

The diversity of germplasm collection is essential in the process of breeding and valorization of the vegetable genetic heritage.
In order to establish and identify valuable genotypes, both for the germplasm collection enrichment and for breeding for new cultivars as well as in hybridization processes, for the selection of suitable parents for crossbreeding, an evaluation of the germplasm collection is necessary.
The Buzau vegetable basin offers favorable conditions for tomato cultivation, this species holding the supremacy in vegetable cultivation, both in intensive and traditional systems.
Also, many local populations maintained in cultivation by traditional vegetable growers have been identified.
BRGV Buzau has a valuable germplasm collection of this species from which 23 lines suitable to be cultivated in protected areas and fields, 17 genotypes with indeterminate growth, 2 genotypes with semi-determinate growth and 4 genotypes with determinate growth were selected for this study.
These were evaluated phenotypically and biometrically, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
The results of the research resulted in the identification of a valuable line, L404 with determinate growth, endowed with the Beck gene which manifests a mucronate fruit.
The line has been proposed for approval and patent in 2021.
