Abstract
The interest in agrobiodiversity research and development activities is increasing worldwide because of the significance of distinct plant species for human health benefits and diet enrichment.
About 80% of the world’s population still depends on traditional remedies based on plants.
A similar situation is in the agrosector; only 12 plant species contribute to 80% of total dietary intake.
Over 50% of the world’s daily requirement of proteins and calories origins from 3 crops – wheat, maize, and rice.
Introducing underutilized green vegetable species with pharmaceutical and nutritional value from various origins for cultivation in closed environment agriculture, such as greenhouses and plant factories, enhances their competitiveness and economic efficiency on both regional and global levels.
The aim of this research is the biodiversification of herbs and underutilized leafy vegetables in CEA as well as an experimental explication of the impact of different cultivation conditions seeking to evaluate the impact of cultivation environment parameters on valuable pharmaceutical and nutraceutical compounds in plant material, thus developing efficient cultivation strategies.
Plants grew in a walk-in controlled environment chamber in hydroponic systems under controlled artificial light-emitting diode (LED) lighting at 16 h photoperiod and 21/17°C day/night temperature.
This research explores how developing specific cultivation strategies is important for underutilized plant species through their receptive impacts on the antioxidant system and biomass accumulation.
