Abstract
Biotic stress is one of the major environmental factors affecting plants.
Bacteria, fungi, viruses, weeds, insects or other pests represents a serious threat to vegetable crops and have a substantial effect on crop growth and development, being responsible for wide losses of crop yield.
Therefore, cultivation of tolerant or resistant cultivars is one of the best options to minimize the losses due to biotic stresses.
Thus, in this study we have assessed two Solanaceus crops, tomatoes and peppers, for plant biotic stress detection and monitoring.
The tomatoes cultivars taken into study were Andrada, Kristinica and Florina 44, while the peppers cultivars taken into study were Cantemir, Roial and Decebal. The cultivars were screen for two successive years 2021-2022. The evaluation for biotic stress was made using a scale from 0 to 3, where 0 was highly tolerant to 3 was highly susceptible.
The observations were made in two vegetable stages: during flowering period and in fruit ripening period.
Statistical differences were found between vegetation periods and between pest populations.
The data collected are showing that Decebal has a predisposition to pest attack, being noted with 3, the most susceptible genotype to biotic stress.
In contrast, the Roial cultivar has a higher pest tolerance, so we recommend it for further studies.
Among the three tomato genotypes studied, Kristinica was the most susceptible genotype to the pathogen attack.
Plant disease management is very important to minimize the damage and financial loss caused by plant pathogens, hence the research will continue with the development of strategies to control Solanaceus plant disease.
