Quality characteristics of some cultivars of sweet potato grown on the sandy soils from the south of Oltenia

Abstract
Sweet potato crops play an important role in agriculture and facilitate food security in many undeveloped countries.
From a nutritional point of view, the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is far superior to the potato (Solanum tuberosum), the nutritional composition of sweet potato tuberous roots varying greatly depending on the cultivar, growing conditions, maturity and storage.
Identification of suitable production areas and cultivar selection strongly depends on cultivar-environment interactions.
In this context, the present work presents the influence of pedo-climatic conditions on the production and quality traits of 6 sweet potato cultivars grown on the sandy soils of southwestern Romania in the period 2020-2022. During the three years of the study, determinations were made regarding the soil reaction, the state of soil supply in mineral elements (total nitrogen, extractable phosphorus, exchangeable potassium), and organic carbon, and the climatic conditions were monitored during the entire vegetation period of sweet potato.
The quality of tuberous sweet potato roots was influenced by both cultivar and climatic conditions.
From a statistical point of view, cultivar DK 19/4 stood out, both in terms of starch content and soluble carbohydrate content.
The studied cultivars presented a water content between 66.06% for DCh 19/3 and 69.48% for DK 19/5. The soluble dry matter content varied between 8.73% in the control cultivar (KSP1), respectively 9.97% in the DCh 19/3 cultivar. 120 days after planting the sweet potato shoots in the field, the amount of vitamin C determined in the tuberous roots varied between 12.32 mg 100 g‑1 of fresh substance in DCh 19/3 and 14.37 mg 100 g‑1 fresh substance in DK 19/4.
