Disease and pest management for solanaceous vegetables in the NE region of Romania

Abstract

Solanaceous vegetable crops are continuously attacked by disease and arthropod pests.
The problems can range from minor to major demages, with high risk to yield.
In Romania, pesticides treatments are still the most effective management strategy, but recently the research focus on experiments with low-pollution products that have minimal environmental impact.
The objective of this study was to identify and monitor the main species of pathogens and pests in solanaceous vegetable crops and their control by applying foliar environmentally friendly pesticides.
The research was carried out in the conventional agricultural polygon of Vegetable Research and Development Station (VRDS) Bacau at pepper, tomato and eggplant crops.
In the NE region from Romania, the main pathogens identified at solanaceous crops in the field were: Xanthomonas vesicatoria (in peppers), Phytophthora infestans (in tomato) and Didymella lycopersici (in eggplant) crops.
The main pests identified in the vegetable crops studied were: Myzus persicae, Aulacorthum solani and Macrosiphum euphorbiae, in pepper and tomato crops and the Leptinotarsa decemlineata, in eggplant crop. Thrips tabaci exceeded the economic threshold in pepper and tomato crops, in 2022. Also, the efficacy of treatments to control the main pathogens and pests in solanaceous crops was evaluated.
