Vertical farming in Romania from research to business

Abstract

In vertical farming, the cultivation of crop plants is performed in a fully controlled, automated system, in an indoor environment, well isolated from external factors, on multi-storey production tanks to maximize the use of the available space.
Vertical crops use up to 95% less water, no pesticides, no soil, no influences due to climate change.
On the other side, the different systems use peat, coconut fiber, perlite and other media that do not involve the presence and development of diseases or pests and the systems and electricity.
Some studies estimate that 350 times more marketable plant mass can be produced in some advanced vertical systems than in the traditional agriculture, using only 1% water and little or no soil.
Our study represents an overview of the different systems and research studies that were used until today in Romania, emphasizing the market opportunities that we can see today in the agrifood environment.
