Abstract
Pepper is an important agricultural crop, not only because of its economic significance, but also being a good sources of bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity.
Quality and yield losses in pepper crop are generally the result of plant diseases among which root rot caused by Rhizoctonia solani is very important.
Although chemical fungicides are still considered by farmers as the major control method of disease, they have harmful effects on human health and the environment.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of seed and soil treatments with mixed bioproducts based on Trichoderma, chitin and salicylic acid to induction of resistance against Rhizoctonia solani in pepper plants under greenhouse conditions.
This study indicates that treatments with mixtures based on Trichoderma, chitin and salicylic acid followed by those based on Trichoderma and chitin causes a significant increase in assimilatory pigments in plants grown in uninfected soil compared to the untreated and uninfected control.
Results demonstrated that all combinations of natural compounds and beneficial microorganism can fortify pepper plants against root rot and induces resistance this being supported by the increase of antioxidant enzymes (POX, PPO) activity involved in defense.
The activity of β-1,3-glucanase and chitinase, enzymes related to pathogenesis was low in the leaves of healthy plants, but their activity was strongly stimulated by infection or by treatments with mixed bioproducts used.
