Abstract
Pea is a valuable source of proteins and can be consumed as whole immature pods (mange-tout), green immature seeds (garden pea) and dry mature seeds.
Although peas can withstand low temperatures and utilize the moisture in the soil during winter, it’s important to note that high temperatures above 25°C and excessive moisture can negatively impact their development and growth.
In the past years, at Vegetable Research Development Station VRDS Buzau a breeding program on Pisum sativum has started.
Our study aimed to identify and select pea accessions with high tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress factors while yielding high-quality produce.
We tracked the lineage of 15 accessions (A1 to A15) from the VRDS Buzău germplasm collection for three years (2020-2022). During the vegetation period of 2020, the weather conditions were suitable for pea cultivation, and we recorded the highest yield.
The heavy rains from May to June 2021 caused flower and fruit abortion and the perfect climate for pathogen attack.
In the spring of 2022, the weather was very capricious.
The wind presence combined with low soil humidity accentuated the soil drought and caused delayed sprouting and reduced plant growth development.
At the same time, the high temperature registered in May, which exceeded 30°C, caused flower abortion due to low pollen viability.
The present work highlighted that A1, A3, A10 and A13 ranked in the lineage study, showing stress factor tolerance and dry beans production with over 300 g m‑2 in 2020, 250 g m‑2 in 2021 and 100 g m‑2 in 2022. Compared to the previous years, in 2022, all the accessions displayed a decreased yield, and A6 and A7 were compromised entirely in 2022.
