Abstract
Plants are sessile organisms exposed in their living environment to the action of adverse factors.
Pathogens reduce plant productivity and production quality, and as a result, there are major economic losses.
Consequently, food security is affected at the household level, nationally and globally.
In this context, the present work proposes an overlook update on sustainable tools for plant disease management.
The practice of sustainable agriculture (and/or sustainable vegetable production) contributes to the transformation of the 21st century into the age of biotechnology.
This will ensure a transition from traditional means of control based on chemical treatments to horticultural research based on a pesticide-free paradigm.
The exploration of different natural resources (e.g., beneficial microorganisms, plant extracts and volatile organic substances produced by plants and/or microorganisms), to detect, research and recommend them for practical use as eco-friendly tools, can represent an option for sustainable control of plant diseases.
To be safe for people, animals, and the environment, the application of the obtained products needs to be done in a greener way, such as nanotechnology, with an equal consideration of its advantages and disadvantages.
As innovative technologies to manage vegetable crops, for low cost and less environmental impact, homeopathic high dilutions are also considered to have low environmental impact and do not contain toxic waste.
Further in-depth research should be done using omics approaches to better know the action mechanisms of the new eco-friendly discovered products.
These products should be mainly applicable in the organic horticulture field by using the best and the most efficient discovered tools.
