Exploitation of some allelopathic species for weed control in ecological agriculture on a climbing bean crop

Abstract
A large number of cultivated plant and weed species produce secondary metabolites known as allelochemicals, which have the potential to be used for weed management in ecological agricultural systems.
The main objective of the study was to evaluate allelopathic potential of some allelopathic species in weed control.
Field experiments were conducted to assess the allelopathic effects of some species: red clover (Trifolium pratense), white clover (Trifolium repens), sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia), yellow mustard (Sinapis alba), oil radish (Raphanus sativus var. oleiformis), barley (Hordeum vulgare), two-rowed barley (Hordeum distichon), oats (Avena sativa) and Japanese lawn (25% Lolium perene ‘Greenway’, 20% Lolium perene ‘Fabian’, 42% Festuca rubra ‘Trac Maxima 1’, 10% Festuca rubra ‘Gz Greenmile’, 3% Poa pratensis. These species were sown in the intercropping system with Phaseolus vulgaris ‘Auria Bacăului’ climbing bean.
Six experimental variants have been studied (including Control). The allelopathic species were sown in rows of 2 m width and 3 m length (6 m2). Weed infestation was evaluated using the metric frame.
The number of weeds and their fresh matter per m2 were assessed.
The main weed species identified in climbing bean crop were: cockspur (Echinochloa crus-galli), perennial sow thistle (Sonchus arvensis), red-root amaranth (Amaranthus retroflexus), pigeon grass (Setaria pumila), pale knotweed (Persicaria lapathifolia), purslane (Portulaca oleracea), canada thistle (Cirsium arvense), groundsel (Senecio vulgaris), bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), guasca (Galinsoga parviflora), prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola), white goosefoot (Chenopodium album), flower-of-an-hour (Hibiscus trionum) and crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis). The degree of weed infestation was significantly reduced by the intercropping of red clover, yellow mustard, oil radish – bean variant and red clover, sainfoin, barley, two-rowed barley, oats – bean variant.
