The influence of climate changes on the productivity of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) grown in the southern area of Oltenia

Abstract
This scientific paper presents the results of a study carried out at Dăbuleni Research-Development Station for Plant Cultivation on Sandy Soil, Romania, regarding the influence of climatic conditions recorded in the period 2020-2022 on the productivity of 5 potato genotypes grown in the steppe area of southern Oltenia.
The experiment was arranged in randomized blocks with three repetitions.
The tubers were planted at 25 cm between plants per row and 70 cm between rows, obtaining a density of 57,142 plants ha‑1. Potatoes were harvested at 65-70 days after the plants emerged, and the following determinations were made: total production, marketable production, non-marketable production, number of tubers plant‑1. The growth, development and productivity of potato plants were strongly influenced by the climatic conditions of the crop year.
The year 2022 stood out in particular, the low temperatures recorded after the planting of potatoes, associated with the phenomenon of frost recorded on April 11, 14 and 21, destroying a very high percentage of shoots that have emerged or were in the process of emerging.
On average, the production of commercial tubers (weighing more than 50 g tuber‑1) was between 12.8 t ha‑1 in the climatic conditions of 2022 year and 30.09 t ha‑1 in the climatic conditions of 2020 year.
Analyzing the genotype-climate interaction, the best results were obtained at the genotype L 1895/1, with an average commercial production of 33.92 t ha‑1, but which in favorable environmental conditions recorded a commercial production of over 50 t ha‑1 (in 2020).
