Abstract
In general, obtaining sprouts has a certain disadvantage among which the humidity requirement the start of the seed imbibition.
Thus, the cultivation substrate, the growing conditions as a whole have a major importance, both from the point of view of maintaining humidity and the accumulation of biologically active compounds in sprouts.
The purpose of this paper is to present the preliminary results, on basil (Ocimium basilicum L.) sprouts (microplants) production by germinating the seeds under controlled conditions, using LEDs artificial light and different substrates in order to obtain a cultivation technology that can maintain an optimal level of hydration.
Therefore, seven experimental variants were used in this study, varying the cultivation substrate composition as follows: (V1 = perlite as control, V2 = perlite and agar 3:1, V3 = perlite and agar 1:1, V4 = perlite and agar 1:3, V5 = perlite and banana peels 3:1, V6 = perlite and banana peels 1:1, V7 = perlite and banana peels 1:3). In terms of elemental analysis V2 experimental variant contained the highest level both for macro and micronutrients.
Highest antioxidant activity and TPC was observed in V3 sprouts.
The results regarding the germination capacity and the number of leaves indicates that the V4 is the optimal variant for these traits.
The experimental variants V5, V6, and V7 sustained a high microbial contamination and did not allow basil sprouts to develop properly.
