Abstract
Tuta absoluta, commonly known as the tomato leafminer moth (TLM), is an invasive insect pest of tomato, with an impressive capacity of spreading and destructive potential.
Following the first detection in Romania in 2009, the pest rapidly spread across country and nowadays poses the biggest challenges for tomato growers in southern Romania.
The fast reproduction rates and control failures by synthetic insecticides due to the overuse are the main reasons for the increasing need for effective alternatives of control.
Biological controls using microbial products are more and more considered as promising option.
Our research has been carried out under semi-controlled conditions to evaluate the insecticidal effects of some experimental products based on two autochthonous Beauveria strains on Tuta absoluta larvae and pupae.
The experimental products have been formulated as liquid (for larval stage control) either as granular product incorporated in soil (for pupae control). At the end of the observation period, the percent of effectiveness against T. absoluta ranged between 53 and 92.7, the best results have been registered in case of the combined use of foliar application and incorporation in soil of the same strain, B. pseudobassiana Bb1, showing its potential as biocontrol agent and proposed to be used in further research that will be developed in production greenhouse condition.
