An analysis of the levels of bioactive components and antioxidant activity in several Dendrobium ‘Khao Sanan’ sections taken at various developmental stages

Abstract
Dendrobium ‘Khao Sanan’ is one of the major cut-flower orchids of Thailand.
In the rainy season, there is often an oversupply of inflorescences, causing the dropping price of cut Dendrobium. However, there are many research reports that various parts of orchids contain important bioactive compounds and can alleviate several diseases.
Thus, the bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity in various parts of D. ‘Khao Sanan’ at different growth stages were evaluated.
The analyses were performed in roots, leaves, pseudobulbs, flowers, and peduncles of 1- and 4-year-olds of D. ‘Khao Sanan’. The results showed that various parts of orchids contain different bioactive compound contents and antioxidant activity.
Total phenolic compounds (6.87±0.25 mg GAE g‑1 DW), monomeric anthocyanin (37.47±11.57 mg L‑1), polysaccharides (24.25±4.57%), and total sugars (106.34±9.28 mg glucose g‑1 crude polysaccharide) were highest in flower parts of 1-year-old plants, which corresponded to the antioxidant activity (1.178±0.065 mg Trolox g‑1 DW). This finding suggested that flowers of D. ‘Khao Sanan’ are a rich source of bioactive compounds and may further be applied as an ingredient in cosmetics or supplementary foods.
