Abstract
Strawberries are essential popular fruit in high demand worldwide.
Recently, the demand for high-quality strawberries has been increasing in Southeast Asia and other hot and humid regions.
However, local cultivation techniques still need to be established, and these regions still depend on imports.
Therefore, we developed the Asian Monsoon Plant Factory System (AMPFS), with an integrated environmental control system for tropical and subtropical regions, for strawberry cultivation in Ishigaki Island, a subtropical part of Japan.
We investigated the effectiveness of daytime LED supplemental lighting in hot and humid environments using AMPFS. AMPFS is an elevated bed strawberry cultivation system with ventilation fans, a heat pump, a fogging system, and a chiller to control air and bed medium temperatures in greenhouses.
Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch. ‘Yotsuboshi’) were grown under the following three conditions from November 2021 to July 2022 to investigate their growth and yield: 1) AMPFS, with ambient light only (control), 2) LED90; AMPFS with LED lighting positioned 90 cm above the growing beds, and 3) LED70; AMPFS with LED lighting placed 70 cm above the growing beds.
The average photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) during the daytime was 231, 359, and 382 μmol m‑2 s‑1 for AMPFS, LED90, and LED70, respectively.
Yields were significantly higher for LED90 and LED70, 970.8 and 830.6 g plant‑1, respectively, compared to 585.3 g plant‑1 for AMPFS. Total above-ground dry matter weights (TDM) were significantly higher for LED90 and LED70, 177.9 and 166.4 g plant‑1, respectively, compared to 127.9 g plant‑1 for AMPFS. There was no significant difference in yield and TDM between LED90 and LED70, suggesting that a daily PPFD of 359 μmol m‑2 s‑1 was sufficient for enhanced ‘Yotsuboshi’ production.
LED supplemental lighting was found to effectively increase strawberry yields in hot and humid subtropical environments.
