Abstract
Dahlia (Dahlia variabilis) is used for cut flowers, which has become popular in recent years.
In 2020, we bred three cultivars with a genetically determined long vase life, ‘Eternity Torch’, ‘Eternity Romance’ and ‘Eternity Rouge’ (called the “Eternity series”). On the other hand, the value of cut flowers is lost in short period when petal abscission is induced by ethylene during storage and transportation, which is observed even in the Eternity series.
In the present study, we investigated ethylene sensitivity of the dahlia cut flowers using commercial cultivars and lines with long vase life bred in our research group, to classify ethylene sensitivity.
The ethylene sensitivity was investigated by response to 10 µL L‑1 exogenous ethylene treatment, as the number of days from harvest until one-third of all petals showed wilting, or abscission of ten or more petals.
As a result, there were large differences in ethylene sensitivity among cultivars and lines.
The ethylene sensitivity of dahlia was classified into three types according to their vase life and occurrence of abscission: abscission within 4 days (High), abscission after 4 days (Middle), without abscission during senescence (Low). Totally 31 cultivars and 55 lines were used for the investigation, and classified 56, 27 and 3 were high, middle and low sensitivities, respectively.
Furthermore, investigations were carried out in winter-spring and summer-autumn seasons, and it was found that there was seasonal variation in the ethylene sensitivity of dahlia cut flowers.
Thus, lines with low ethylene sensitivity were selected, and ‘Eternity Shine’ was obtained which vase life was 10.0 days with 10 µL L‑1 ethylene treatment in 2020 summer-autumn season.
These cultivars and lines will be used in the future to clarify the genetic mechanism of ethylene response in dahlias.
